About this course

This course targets professional translators as well as translation and CAT teachers who want to test and broaden their theoretical and practical knowledge of the use of the Internet, an indispensable tool in today's professional translation environment.

By the end of this course you should have tested your knowledge of basic concepts and tasks relating to the use of the Internet and enhanced your knowledge of Internet tasks that are particularly relevant to translators.

Course structure

  • Network Technology – covering theoretical concepts such as types of networksIP-addresseshostnamesclient/server architecturecookies, as well as information on different possibilities for connecting to the Internet.
  • Security – this section offers information on basic security issues such as the use of firewalls and malware.
  • World-Wide-Web – devoted to basic concepts and functionalities related to the WWW, such as hyperlinksURL and browsers.
  • Internet Connectivity – containing practical information regarding the different types of Internet connections and VPN connection.
  • Browsing the Web – dealing also with practical information related to the Web, such as saving web pagesviewing source codes of web pages, determining the character encoding of web pages, bookmarking web pages.
  • Information Retrieval – this section offers an overview of the different types of search engines available and deals with Internet searching, e.g. how to systematically search for information on the Web, how to use the advanced search functions offered by search engines, and how to search for definitions.
