In a network, a firewall is a piece of hardware or software that controls the data flow between zones of trust (e.g. LAN or the Internet) or protects an internal network from external threats, such as attacks from the Internet. It prevents, for example, direct communication between an organisation's networked computers and an external computer.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
Translators and translation teachers should be aware of the functions of a firewall because sometimes, in order to be able to make certain types of connections, they will need to modify the firewall’s settings.
