ICT Skills 1 - Theory and Practice

Welcome to the ICT Skills 1 (Theory and Practice)

This course aims to test and enhance your basic theoretical and practical knowledge regarding Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It targets professional translators as well as translation and CAT Tools teachers who want to test their ICT skills or learn more about ICT topics before starting to use CAT tools. 

By the end of this course you should have tested your knowledge on basic concepts and tasks regarding ICT skills. You should also have increased your theoretical knowledge on topics such as character encoding, software, file types, etc. and your practical knowledge on files and folders, storage capacity, language settings and trouble shooting.

Choose one of the two following sections:

Theory

The Theory section includes the following subsections: 

  • Basic Theory – where concepts such as ICT, hardware and software, bits and bytes and tags, etc. are explained.
  • Character Encoding
  • Software – on basic software classification.
  • File Types – where file structure, file classification, formats and file extensions are explained.

Practice

The section Practice covers the following subsections:

  • Files & Folders – on creating, selecting, renaming, moving, searching, restoring, compressing files, etc.
  • Storage Capacity – including tasks such as finding out system information, administrative rights or installing and uninstalling software.
  • Language Settings – how to change language settings.
  • Trouble Shooting – where some tips are given on how to proceed when the mouse or the computer are not responding.
