ICT Skills 4 - Spreadsheets in Excel

About this course

This course targets professional translators as well as translation and CAT teachers who want to test and broaden their knowledge in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), specifically regarding spreadsheets. This knowledge can be used for bookkeeping or glossary creation and/or when translating spreadsheets.

By the end of this course you should have tested your knowledge of basic concepts and tasks in the use of spreadsheet software and enhanced your knowledge of those tasks that are of particular interest to translators.

 

Course structure

  1. Basic knowledge – covering topics such as opening blank workbooks, importing data into an existing spreadsheet, and exporting data from spreadsheets. 
  2. Formatting worksheets – dealing with functions such as changing the column width and row height, setting columns to specific widths and rows to specific heights, showing or hiding gridlines in a worksheet, displaying data in different colours. 
  3. Editing cell content – devoted to information on how to undo, redo and repeat the last action, how to convert columns to rows and rows to columns, how to freeze rows and columns, among others.
  4. Language options – containing information related to checking the spelling in one or more languages, entering line-breaks, and enabling automatic correction.
  5. Charts – this section deals with information on creating charts and updating them when the data in the spreadsheet changes.
  6. Printing – covering topics such as printing worksheets to fit a specific width, adjusting page breaks before printing, printing without cell gridlines, printing row and column headings or labels on every page, among others.
