Creating documents in Word using a variety of unique fonts, for example using specific Greek characters, may pose problems if those documents are to be opened using a computer other than the one that was used to create them, because that machine may not have the same fonts installed. Instead of sending the font files to another machine, you can embed TrueType fonts into your Word 2003 document. This way, your document should be viewable the way you originally designed it.
To embed TrueType fonts:
- Choose Tools|Options.
- When the Options dialog box appears, click on the Save tab.
- Check Embed TrueType fonts.
- Check also the Embed characters in use only box.
- Click OK to close the dialog box.
To disable this feature repeat the above steps but uncheck the box Embed TrueType fonts.
Note that documents saved with embedded TrueType fonts will have a larger size than other documents.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
Sometimes, clients use unique fonts in the documents to be translated that translators may not have. If translators do not know how to embed the specific type fonts used by the client, they won't be able to view the documents as they were originally designed. This means, the translator won't be working with the original layout of the documents and the client will need to invest time afterwards re-establishing the original layout in the translated document.
