Do you know how to define the date format in Excel? (21/32)

Yes

Find out

When working with several languages, you may need to use a date format other than the one corresponding to the default language in Excel. Often, when you type a date in a cell in a particular format - such as dd-mm-yy (EN) or dd.mm.yy (DE) - Excel converts it automatically to the date format of the default language.

You can avoid this and make sure that the dates in your Excel worksheet remain exactly as you entered them.

  1. Select the cells or ranges in the worksheet where you want to apply a particular date format.
  2. From the Format menu select the Cells option.
  3. In the dialogue box that opens select Date in the Category field.
  4. In the Type field choose the date format you want.
  5. In the Locale field, select the corresponding language or language variety.
  6. Click OK.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
Since translators typically work with several languages - sometimes even in a single file - they need to know how to present information in the format of the respective languages.
