Can you install software on your computer? (27/31)

Yes

Find out

Software installation

Installation is the process of placing software on a computer. In order to install software on your computer you need to be the local administrator or have local administrative rights.

Installation files

Normally, the installation process can be executed by simply running the "install.exe" file by double clicking or the "install.msi" from a storage device (floppy disk, flash drive or CD) or from the Internet. The installation program in the "install.exe" or "install.msi" is specifically designed to copy, decompress and setup all the files needed in order to run a program. These two files can be executed using the Run option in the Start menu. In the dialog box that opens, select the location of the "install.exe" or "install.msi" file and click Run to start the installation process.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
Very often, translators need to have specific software applications installed on their computers. Even if they do not need to do it themselves because they know a specialist who can do it, it is a plus if they are able to install their own translation memory tools, terminology management tools, dictionaries, etc., assuming of course that they have administrator rights.
