To convert the above table to simple text:

  1. Select the table
  2. From the Table menu select the option Convert|Table to Text
  3. A dialog box opens, asking you to select the separation mark – the separation marks are tabstops, paragraph marks, commas or can be user-defined
  4. If you select tab, it means that the information displayed in one cell of the table will be separated by the information displayed in another cell by a tab
  5. Click OK

The result should look like this:

Translation Memories Memorias de Traducción
Terminology Management Gestión Terminológica
Software Localisation Localización de Software
Project Management Gestión de Proyectos
eLearning Enseñanza a distancia

To save the converted table as text:

  1. Go to File|Save as and choose Plain text (.txt) from the Save as type drop-down menu
  2. Make sure you choose the right character encoding in the dialog box that opens

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
This information is particularly interesting for translators because they work very often with glossaries or term lists in serveral languages which usually have the form of tables. Since many of the translation specific tools used by translators - such as terminology databases or translation memories - cannot be "fed" with tables but with simple text, it is first necessary to delete the tables or extract the text from the tables. Only then can terms for example be imported into a terminology database (such as MultiTerm).
