In order to insert special characters or symbols, which are not available from the keyboard, – such as e.g. ®, µ, etc.:

  • Go to the Insert menu in the menu bar
  • Select Symbol
  • And from the dialog box that opens, choose the characters or symbols you need

Since each font has a number of characters and symbols which are not shown on the keyboard, you can choose from the same dialog box the font for particular characters and symbols you want to have displayed.

To insert a character or symbol from the dialog box into your text:

  • click on it once
  • Then click Insert

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
The need for special characters for translators arises particularly when translating a file which contains elements from various languages – for example, a specialised mathematical text would include letters from the Greek alphabet.
