Do you know how to check file permissions? (22/31)

Yes

Find out

Folder properties

File and folder permissions are part of the file and folder properties. These properties are file or folder specifications which do not refer to their contents. To check the specifications of a particular file or folder, right-click on it and choose Properties. A dialog box opens offering you information on the file (name, type of file, default program to open it, location, size, date of creation, last changed, accessed last, permissions  read-only, hidden, etc.) or folder (name, type of folder, location, size, contents – files, other folders , creation date and permissions – read-only, hidden, …).

In order to set or remove file or folder permissions, you need to be the owner/administrator or have been granted permission by the owner/administrator. At the bottom of Properties, in the Attributes section, you can check the Read-only or the  Hidden boxes. Before clicking OK, do not forget to Apply your changes.

Read-only and hidden files

All files or folders saved as Read-only can be displayed or opened but not changed. On the other hand, all Hidden ones remain on the computer but will not be displayed when files or folders are listed.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
If for example, a project manager of a team of free-lance translators wants to check the whole specific information on a file containing a translation that needs to be modified, he/she can have a look at the file properties and immediately know who created or last-modified the file, when this was done, what are its attributes (read-only, hidden, etc.) and then contact the translator or proofreader.

Project managers, or translators in general, can also make use of the file properties to protect original files in a translation project, so that these do not get altered or lost. This is possible by changing the file's properties to "read-only".
