This definition, taken from the PMBOK Guide, applies readily to any translation assignment. The most important terms in it are temporary and unique.
Temporary indicates that every (translation) project has a definite beginning and a definite end – which constitutes its main difference compared with the usual ongoing operations in an enterprise.
At the same time, unlike mass production, every translation is distinct from any other translation product due to the series of specifications that come with each translation assignment – source text, target group, target market, customer specifications, etc. – making the product unique.
According to the [ISO 17100] standard, every translation project will have a project manager who is responsible for carrying out the project in accordance with the procedures established at the beginning.
In the following sections, we will take a closer look at these 'project activities' and 'project requirements' in order to find out how the systematic application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques can help translators to manage their translation projects.
