About this course
This course offers theoretical and practical knowledge about the processes involved in the management of software localisation projects, and offers tips regarding the translation of software in general. It targets professional translators as well as translation teachers and CAT tool trainers who teach localisation courses for translators. By the end of this course you should know more about the different processes involved in software localisation projects and about the localisation of each software component. You should also have learnt what localisation kits are and what their contents may include. Finally, you will also learn some tips related to translating text in software user interfaces and online help and some sources of problems in the software localisation process.
Course Structure
- Processes in localisation projects: In this section different processes present in software localisation projects will be identified, namely: initiating, planning, executing, controlling and monitoring processes and the closing process.
- Localising software components: This section focuses on the localisation of the different software components: user interface and documentation – including printed documentation and online documentation (which includes: web pages, online help and online manuals).
- Preparation of localisation kits: This section deals with the definition of localisation kits, their structure and contents, as well as their importance in software localisation projects.
- Tips for translating software: This section offers tips regarding language, style, quality assessment and non-translatables specifically related to translating software user interfaces and online help.
- Sources of localisation problems: In this section some of the most common sources of problems when localising will be covered.
