Technical Prerequisites
- Terminology management tool
- Translation memory tool(s)
- General spreadsheet software, such as MS Excel
- PCs with Internet connection
Working Methodology
In order to be successfully engaged in this workflow, the students have to have good translation and ICT skills, understand principles of terminology, translation memory and project management; as well as have good command of terminology management tools and translation memory tools.
Roles
Different roles will be assigned to students or groups of students, according to their number and the number of available PCs.
Project managers
One student or group of students will be responsible for preparing the translation project. The student(s) in charge of project management will use a general application such as MS Excel to manage the project.
Among the tasks to be completed by project managers:
- Filtering of data relevant for this project (client) and exporting the data; this includes pre-existing resources, such as translation memories, translations that will have to be aligned, terminological databases, etc.
- Creating project TM and importing previously-filtered data
- Analysing and pretranslating using the existing TM
- Creating the translation kit to be sent to the translators containing all the reference materials, the source texts in the required format – they may include a pretranslation – and a translation brief
- Assigning tasks to professionals: translators, terminologists and revisers
- Delivering the relevant materials
- Setting deadlines and tracking task progress
Terminologists
Will be responsible for terminology research (mono and bilingual) and creating and updating termbases.
Translators
Will have to:
- Translate a new project using the TM prepared by project managers
- Deliver translation, TM and terminology (export the termbase provided by the terminologist)
Revisers
Will be responsible for revising and correcting translations and giving translators feedback on their work.
Project managers
Will receive the translations from proofreaders, translation memories and terminology databases from all translators involved in one project, and will be responsible for:
- Updating and merging all TMs
- Updating and merging terminology
- Coordinating and delivering translations to client on time
Client
The teacher will play the role of the client. He/she will have to review students’ work, mark corrections, and give students their work back for updating.
According to the 'client's' corrections, each student or group of students will then have to update his/her work (e.g. translation, translation memory or terminology database, depending on the assigned roles).
In groups, students can deliver short presentations about the project from different perspectives (translators, terminologists, project managers and revisers). These presentations can be followed by class discussions.
