Do you know how to display specific file information such as file extension and size? (16/31)

Yes

Find out

Sometimes you may need to find out extra information about the files or folders you work with. This information does not have to do with content, but with the files or folders themselves. For example, it is important to know how big a file is if you want to upload it on the Internet or download it from a Webpage, or if you want to send it via email attached to a message. It is also fundamental to know the date when a particular file or folder was modified, for example, in a scenario where different people are working on different versions of the same document.

In order to display specific file or folder information:

  1. In Windows Explorer|Views select Details
  2. This displays  the files together with information such as file extensionsizedocument type and date of last change
  3. Have a go at choosing the other options available in View and see what happens

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
When translating it is common to have several files or several copies of the same file with different names, containing different kind of information (such as only text, only graphics, both, etc.). Sometimes the translator him/herself makes several copies or translation versions and after a while does not remember anymore which file contains the final translation.

Only by having displayed the specific information on the file or folder - such as date, file extension or size - translators can know at a glance when the file was created, last modified or sent by the client, what type of file it is (which can be identified by looking at the file extension), how large the file is, etc.
