Do you know how to rename files? (17/31)

Yes

Find out

Locate the file or folder you want to rename by using Windows Explorer or My Computer. Once located, right click on the file or folder icon, choose Rename and type the new name – make sure you don’t delete the file extension, e.g. *.doc, *.xls.

Alternatively, you can click twice on the file or folder icon without double-clicking. If you click once you will see that the file or folder name is highlighted in blue. If you click again, you will see that you are able to type the new name. The same operation can be performed by pressing F2.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
All translators and translation teachers know that original files should be saved preferably in a different location as the translation, and that only copies of the original files are the ones to be translated. It is very important to always keep an original copy of the file sent by the client or translation agency.

After finishing translating or proofreading, it is always a good idea to rename the translated or reviewed file. Sometimes, clients or translation agencies specify the name translated or reviewed files should have, but sometimes not and then the translator has to do it him/herself. In both cases, translators must be able to rename files.

Also when working or intending to work with computer-aided translation tools - such as translation memories, terminology management tools, project management tools or software localisation tools, among others - renaming files is one of the  basic ICT skills needed. Very often, after creating a translation project, a translation memory or a database translators need for any reason to change the name of the file or folder and must know how to do it.
