Do you know how to move files? (18/31)

Yes

Find out

Once created, files and folders can be moved from their original location. This can be done from My Computer or from Windows Explorer. If you use My Computer, click on the Folders button on the toolbar to divide the window into two panes, so that the main directories appear on the left and the subdirectories on the right-hand pane. There are different ways of moving a file or folder.

Cut and paste

Select the file or folder on the right-hand pane then use the Edit menu from the menu bar and choose the Cut and Paste options.

Drag and drop

You can also move them by dragging the selected file or folder – while holding down the left mouse button – across to the left pane and to the drive or folder into which you want to move it, and then releasing the mouse button. This will move the file or folder on the same disk but  will copy it to a different disk.

Shortcuts

Another way to move files or folders is by using keyboard commands. First, select the file or folder you want to move. Then either hold down the CTRL key and press the X key (CTRL + X) to cut the file or folder, or press CTRL + C to copy it.  Navigate to the location where you want to move your file or folder and use CTRL + V to paste the file or folder you previously cut or copied.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
This is a basic ICT skill needed when translating using the computer. It can happen that you save your translation in the wrong folder and you realise it later on when your translation is already finished. In this case, you can locate the right folder where you want to store your translated file and simply move it by using the cut and paste or drag and drop functions or the shortcuts.

Also when working or intending to work with computer-aided translation tools - such as translation memories, terminology management tools, project management tools or software localisation tools, among others - moving files is one of the  basic ICT skills needed. Very often, after creating a translation project, a translation memory or a database translators need for any reason to move a file or folder and must know how to do it.
