Do you know the difference between workbooks and worksheets? (1/32)

Yes

Find out

Worksheet

worksheet – also called spreadsheet – is the basic workspace used in spreadsheet software such as Excel when working with and storing data. Worksheets are structured as cells organized into columns and rows.

Workbook

workbook comprises one or more worksheets. It functions as a relational database. A relational database is an organized collection of data structured according to a logical representation of information. The data is stored separately from the application, which accesses the data via a set of links. From a computing point of view, relational databases can be viewed as independent 'objects' receiving messages, processing data and sending messages to other objects, each with its roles and responsibilities.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
When translators receive a translation request to translate an Exceldocument, they should be aware that an Excel file is essentially a workbook consisting of several worksheets and/or charts. This is important, because different worksheets may contain text that must be translated. Moreover, within a workbook, there may be links between worksheets that have to be preserved.
