Do you know how to freeze columns and rows? (15/32)

Yes

Find out

If you have a long spreadsheet and you want to make the row or column headings visible for navigating comfortably to the last rows or columns of your spreadsheet, you can "freeze" the row or column with the headings.

For this purpose, do the following:

  • Select first the row below or column to the right (or to the left, if you are working with Arabic, for example Smiley) of the row or column with the headings
  • Go to the menu Window and select Freeze panes

Now you will be able to scroll up and down the spreadsheet and will have always displayed the row or column headings on your screen.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?

This information is particularly useful when translators have to translate long or wide Excel spreadsheets. If a spreadsheet contains many rows, translators won't be able to see the heading of the columns or panes when translating the text in the last rows: This would imply constantly scrolling up and down in order to know the context of the text being translated. The same applies for a spreadsheet containing many columns or panes: the headings on the first pane wont be displayed when translators are situated in the last pane. Freezing rows or columns is a way for translators to have always the information needed displayed.
