Do you know how to merge or split cells in Excel? (14/32)

Yes

Find out

This function is particularly useful when an Excel spreadsheet contains text as well as figures. By merging cells you can, for example, justify titles or headings independently of row and column sizes.

Merging

  1. Select the cells to be merged (they must be adjacent).
  2. In the Formatting toolbar, click the Merge and Center button .
  3. The cells will be merged within the selected row or column and the contents of the upper-left cell will be displayed centred within the merged cells.
  4. The data in the other merged cells will be deleted.
  5. If you want a different alignment for the cell content, select the cell and click on the toolbar buttons Align Left  or Align Right .

Splitting

You may later decide to split merged cells (only merged cells can be split).

  1. Select the merged cells.
  2. Click again on the Merge and Center button .
  3. The contents of the merged cell will appear in the upper-left cell of the group of split cells.

Why is this information important for translators and translation teachers?
This information is especially useful when translators need to translate text that has been spread over several cells. For example, they might need to merge the text fragments in order to get meaningful units to translate.
