Project Management 2 - Translators Tools

MS Project

1. Initiating a project (1/5)

When making a translation project plan, you must take into account: the tasks involved, their duration, the dependencies between them, the required resources, and the project costs. All these can be managed by using MS Project.

Start and End Date

When creating a new project (using File|New), your first step is to specify the start date. If you also enter the delivery date (end date), the number of working days of the project is calculated automatically.

If, instead of the delivery date, you enter the estimated work time for the different project tasks, MS Project will calculate a delivery date to be suggested to the client. The start or end date can be changed at any time, by clicking Project Information on the Project menu.

General Information

The next step is to provide the core information about the project: its title, goal, the people who will manage it and maintain the project file, any known constraints, and other general project notes. You do this by selecting File|Propertiesand accessing the Summary tab.

Project Calendar

By default, the project calendar considers Monday through Friday as working days, with a schedule from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including an hour off for lunch. These settings can be changed by using the option ToolsChange Working Time (View|Gantt Chart must be selected before).
