Terminology Exercise 2

Creating a new terminology database in MultiTerm - Introduction

Prerequisites

In order to do the following exercise you need to have Trados MultiTerm iX or MultiTerm 7 installed on your computer.

Outline of this exercise

To illustrate the steps of this exercise we have included several screenshots. MultiTerm iX was used for the screenshots, but you can complete this exercise whilst working with MultiTerm 7, as although the layout has slightly changed but the steps and processes remain pretty much the same.

On completion of these exercises, you should be able to:

  • Create a new terminology database (TDB) in  MultiTerm
  • Use the Creation Wizard
  • Define entry structure, index, text and pick-list fields, interdependence between fields (e.g. definition/source)

Preparing your working environment

Before starting to work with MultiTerm, prepare your working environment by creating the directory structure you will need to save your new database. You should create a separate folder for your termbase and a logical and well-organised folder structure, so that later on you can easily find your files again. An example of a working folder structure is: My Documents/Terminology_Management/Termbases.

For the purposes of the present exercise create a sub-folder called TDB within the folder Termbases, and use it to save the MultiTerm terminology database that you create.
