Translation Memories 1

File formats (6/10)

Documents which have to be translated come in a variety of file formats, e.g in the format of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, in desktop publishing formats like Adobe FrameMaker, InDesign, QuarkXPress, or in formats of markup languages like HTML, XML.

Format conversion

Before such documents can be translated using the editor of a TM tool, they have to be converted into a format which the editor can recognise and where the text to be translated is separated from the layout information. Usually, this is done by a filtering process which also converts the layout information into tags or codes. When the translation is finished, the target text has to be exported from the TM tool and the original format must be recreated.
