Scenario 1

Teaching in a PC lab with several computers, one student working on one PC

In this scenario, each student has a computer available. The teacher's computer will be used to project the work prepared by one of the students. Based on the student’s work, the teacher will make corrections and the class will discuss and give more input for discussion. Depending on the work done in class, there will be several possibilities:

  • If doing terminology work: According to the corrections made in class, students can edit the terminology entries they prepared as homework in their own local termbases. Alternatively, one student at the front of the classroom can edit the entries contained in the server-based termbase being projected for the whole classroom.
  • If doing translation:
    • With termbase: Students will be able to directly edit their translations and/or local termbases in class. Depending on the tool used, these corrections can be made within the tool (for example in Déjà-Vu X) or by making use of an interface between the word processor and the terminology application used – e.g. Microsoft Office Word <> TRADOS MultiTerm. Alternatively, the student at the front of the classroom can edit his/her translation and the server-based termbase, both being projected for the whole classroom.
    • With termbase and TM database: Students will be able to directly edit their translations, local translation memories and terminology databases in class. Depending on the tool used, these corrections can be made within the tool (for example in Déjà-Vu X) or by making use of an interface between the word processor, the translation memory and the terminology application used – e.g. Microsoft Office Word <> TRADOS MultiTerm <> TRADOS Translator’s Workbench. Alternatively, the student at the front of the classroom can edit his/her translation, the server-based translation memory and termbase, all being projected for the whole classroom.
  • If doing project management: Students will be able to compare and discuss the different project-related files they prepared and to enter the resulting changes directly into their own versions. If only one student or one group of students is responsible for project management, the result of their work can be projected for the whole classroom. The computer can also be used for messaging purposes (e.g. assignment of project tasks by electronic mail or a special messaging system).
