Scenario 3

Teaching in a traditional classroom with only one computer and students working individually or in groups

In this scenario there is only one PC available (usually the teacher’s PC) and students work with their paper materials or paper translations.

  • If doing terminology work: The server-based or local terminology database will be displayed for students to give input individually or in groups (e.g. reporting results of their own terminology research, etc.). One student, group of students or the teacher him/herself will input the changes directly into the server-based or local termbase, whilst the rest of the class makes corrections or notes in their paper materials.
  • If doing translation:
    • With termbase: One student's translation, together with the server-based or local termbase used for the course, will be displayed on the teacher’s computer for all students to give input individually or in groups. The teacher will make corrections, whilst the student at the front will edit the translation being displayed and the termbase. The rest of the class will only be able to make corrections on their paper translations and to make notes on the new information being entered in the termbase.
    • With termbase and TM database: One student's translation, together with the server-based or local termbase and TM database used for the course, will be displayed on the teacher’s computer for all students to give input individually or in groups. The teacher will make corrections, whilst the student at the front will edit the translation being displayed, the termbase and/or TM database. The rest of the class will only be able to make corrections on their paper translations and to take notes on the new information being entered in the databases.
  • If doing project management: One version of the project-related files can be discussed, displayed and edited on the teacher's computer. The use of a mailing/messaging system is only possible if the students have access to private computers or a PC lab with an internet connection.
