Project Management 2 - Translators Tools

MS Excel

Overview

MS Excel is one of the most widely used applications in translation project management. This is because many users of MS Office are familiar with its functionalities.

Since it is not a dedicated project management tool, you should not expect to find an integrated system where purchase orders, CVs, bookings and quotes are found at the click of a mouse. Nevertheless, with some imagination and creativity, these can be managed in Excel.

As a tool that is widely used in accounting, it offers functionalities such as creating and formatting spreadsheets, calculating values using formulae, importing and analysing data, and creating charts and graphs.

Excel allows you to customise the properties of rows and columns, and to share information across different spreadsheets within the same workbook. In short, it offers many possibilities to translation project managers.

The aim of this course is to introduce you to the translation project management steps that can be handled using MS Excel. This is not an Excel tutorial, but an exemplification of how some of its features support translation project management. You can find a more general tutorial on MS Excel in the eCoLoTrain ICT Skills Module.

This course was created using MS Office XP.
