Internal Structure of Data Categories
Structure of data category entries: this is the structure of the data categories for each individual entry. Though there is a variety of different possible entry structures, in a well-structured TDB the individual entries in the data categories should have a fixed structure.
In order to define the internal structure of data categories, terminology management tools usually offer templates called "Patterns of entry fields" or "input models" to control the data input and ensure the consistency of the data in the database.
These templates allow:
- to predefine standard values for fields (e.g. a field called Parts of Speech (POS) could have the following as subcategories: noun represented as N, verb as V, adjective as A) and their status (if the information is mandatory or not).
- to decide which information should appear in the entries, how often and in which sequence.
- to define the formats or layouts - e.g. as text, pick list, etc. - which are dependent on the type of field and its content.
Consistency of Data Categories
When defining data categories it is important to be consistent:
- All data elements should correspond to the definition of the data category to which they are assigned:
Context: | A utiliser dans les NOTICES D'UTILISATION |
vs.
Remark: | A utiliser dans les NOTICES D'UTILISATION |
In the example, the content of the field is not a context but a remark.
