Reorganizing a TM (5/6)

The reorganising function is also present in almost all TM applications and consists of updating the database index files or compacting the TM files at regular intervals to save disk space and so increase performance. Files can be shrunk to a third or less of their original size.

It makes sense to compact databases after you have:

  • deleted a large number of lexicon entries from a project file
  • deleted one or several files from a project
  • added a large amount of data to any file
  • deleted any subset of data from a terminology database or translation memory

Terminological note

According to the TM application, the name of the reorganizing function varies. For example, in Déjà Vu this is called Compact and offers users the possibility to "compact" the project files, the translation memory, the terminology database or the filters.
