Analysis and statistics: what for? (1/8)

All TM tools offer features for analysing source texts before translation proper begins. These analysis modules are important for project management tasks such as calculating project workload and preparing quotes.

Usually, the analysis process is based on a comparison of the source language segments contained in the source text(s) with the target language segments stored in a TM. The analysis module calculates the percentage of segments which have exact matches or fuzzy matches (differentiated by various levels of fuzziness, e.g. 95 - 99%, 85 - 94%, etc.).

These results can be saved as a text file, sometimes as a comma-separated value (CSV) file. These files can then be easily imported into a spreadsheet, where project managers often adapt the word price for certain levels of matches of translation units (e.g. for exact matches or matches with high degrees of similarity). These files can also be imported into dedicated project management systems.

Analysis and statistics functions may also include separate options for calculating word counts, counts of characters or counts of embedded layout codes, which makes it easier to calculate the workload that the project is going to entail.
